Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems (EGCS)
High-efficiency marine scrubber packings for IMO 2020 SOx compliance, installed on 150+ vessels worldwide.
IMO 2020 regulations limit sulfur oxide (SOx) emissions from marine vessels to 0.1% sulfur equivalent, a 85% reduction from prior limits. Ship operators can comply by switching to low-sulfur fuel — expensive and subject to availability constraints — or by installing an SO₂ Exhaust Gas Cleaning System (EGCS) that scrubs exhaust from conventional high-sulfur fuel oil to within regulatory limits.
EGCS installations face a distinctive set of engineering constraints: scrubbers must fit within the physical envelope of an existing vessel, handle high gas volumes and significant particulate loading from combustion exhaust, resist corrosion from seawater and SOx-laden gas, and maintain reliable performance under the variable loading conditions of active shipping routes. Low pressure drop is critical — excess backpressure on the engine exhaust path reduces fuel efficiency and engine performance. Fouling resistance matters for uptime: a scrubber that requires frequent maintenance creates operational cost and compliance risk.
Scrubber Packing for Marine Exhaust Gas Cleaning
Q-PAC® and LANPAC® (Thermoplastic)
Lantec high-efficiency random packings have been installed in more than 150 EGCS ships worldwide. Their drip point mechanism — breaking liquid seawater into fine droplets for gas-liquid contact rather than relying on liquid films — delivers high SO₂ removal efficiency at lower pressure drop than conventional tower packings. The open geometry resists fouling from combustion particulates, reducing maintenance requirements in service.
Thermoplastic versions are available in polypropylene and PVDF/Kynar for chemical resistance requirements. The flow-through structure minimizes resistance to exhaust gas while maximizing contact area per unit volume, allowing compact scrubbers that fit within the space constraints of marine vessels.
Metal Tower Packing (Stainless Steel)
For installations requiring metal construction — elevated temperature service, structural requirements, or specific regulatory specifications — Lantec metal tower packings are available in Duplex 2205 and 304/316 stainless steel. These bring the same drip point efficiency and low-pressure-drop architecture to applications where thermoplastics are unsuitable.
